Kamikaze planes hitting U.S. Navy

Thursday, February 17, 2011

Kamikaze pilots would attempt to crash their aircraft into enemy ships—planes often laden with explosives, bombs, torpedoes and full fuel tanks. The aircraft's normal functions (to deliver torpedoes or bombs or shoot down other aircraft) were put aside, and the planes were converted to what were essentially manned missiles in an attempt to reap the benefits of greatly increased accuracy and payload over that of normal bombs. The goal of crippling as many Allied ships as possible, particularly aircraft carriers, was considered critical enough to warrant the combined sacrifice of pilots and aircraft.

USS Bunker Hill was hit by kamikazes piloted by Ensign Kiyoshi Ogawa (photo above) and another airman on May 11, 1945. 389 personnel were killed or missing from a crew of 2,600.

Just wanted to share this with you guys. What do you think of these attacks? Would you do the same for your country? Some comments would be appreciated

That's an insane level of dedication. I can't even understand how this was accepted by their own people. Oh well for the greater good I guess.

Patriotism is essentially dead. Most politicians and people think defending their country whilst being paid for it is some kind of wonderful act for their nation.

Being patriotic however, is genuinely feeling in your heart your country is the best, and wanting it to do well, regardless of how much money or how well they are doing.

Anyways, i sure as hell wouldn't suicide bomb, damn stupid thing to do.

And this is why we had to drop those two bombs...

If I were religious and was instructed by who I thought was a god then maybe, but as it is I dont feel anywhere near enough patriotism to undergo definite death for my country. I may be willing to serve and risk my life, but nothing like kamikazes.

Great post

Japanese patriotism is extraordinary and I am certain many would still do the same for their country. However, in the western world, such patriotism is not common (which can be a good and a bad thing). I wouldn't do it and I don't know anyone that would.

I wouldn't call it patriotism, more like nationalism

Wow, I never actually saw a video of them attacking before. It's a crazy concept that people are willing to do things like that for a country.

What goes through someone's mind when they intentionality sacrifice themselves to bomb something...

They weren't necessarily forced to do this. They did it by their own free will. It goes to show that Japan back then had a lot more patriotic gusto than America.
